What
I remember most about this job was the long and painful commute to Simi
Valley everyday for three months. To alleviate some of the driving time,
a couple of buddies and I arranged to carpool. But even that was not
without peril. Once, cruising down the 405 after a long day of work,
we heard a loud explosion coming from the back of the car. To our surprise,
the rear-window had shattered. Not knowing what had caused it, we pulled
over to investigate. It turned out that a Camry had rear-ended the car
behind us, which in turn had rear-ended us. In the midst of this chaos,
the woman who had caused the accident, jumped out of her car, and said
to us, 3 straight men: "Um, I just got a breast job, and my breasts
really hurt! Is this normal...?" She was genuinely distressed.
It was one of those L.A. moments that left us dumb-founded and searching
for something clever to say. During this time when driving became one
of my least favorite activities, I was ironically assigned to texture-paint
cars and streets for the movie! To make the workflow easier, I devised
systems that would increase productivity. For example, I simplified
the process by painting only 4 textures per car, and projecting the
textures laterally across each car. I did this using Photoshop, Maya
and Mtor.
